/ 01 - story

Twenty years of cutting the Neuropunk podcast by hand. Then new tech arrived and I wrote this tool.

Hi - I'm DJ Bes. Yevgeny Besman. Thirty years in drum & bass, creator of Neuropunk: the label, the podcast, the festivals, and the rest of the orbit and ecosystem.

In January 2007 I launched the Neuropunk podcast. Today it's the most-streamed D&B podcast in the world by daily streams - and on the scene it's often called the benchmark for DJ mixing dynamics and transitions. Each episode took me months: open the legendary ancient Mixmeister Fusion, line up track by track, click every marker, draw volume + EQ automation for every transition. One hour of finished podcast - weeks of nights and painstaking puzzle-solving to get the transitions and the sound right.

Around the podcast grew an ecosystem: labels, festivals, an academy with 600+ students, a production center, booking, our own TV in Neurobunker - a former bomb shelter in St Petersburg - and a hardware line: isodynamic monitor headphones among the fastest and most accurate in the world for EDM production.

In parallel - Gydra, a duo with Menfort since 2014: 130+ releases on RAM, Blackout, Eatbrain, Bad Taste, Cause 4 Concern, Trendkill, Renegade Hardware, Dutty Audio; collabs with Black Sun Empire, Rene LaVice, BTK, Prolix, Gridlok, Pythius; remixes for The Prodigy, Linkin Park, Babymetal, Celldweller; Best Album, Best Producer and Best Track at European Drum & Bass Awards.

Through the Neuropunk media holding, more than two thousand drum & bass artists have been brought to the stage over twenty-five years.

Betonmixer is the tool I've been building since December 2025, 24/7, to keep mixing without losing time on the same meaningless routine I dragged, clicked, and cut by hand for decades. Every transition, every double drop, every bass swap - all the manual work of cutting a Neuropunk episode - automated. Betonmixer is a very flexible tool. It can be an auto-mix toy for people with little sound-production experience and a precise, sharp weapon for professionals. What matters: it's not software stuffed with useless party features, not an abandoned dinosaur from the 2000s, and not a DAW where one hour of mix costs a week of nights. Nothing extra here. 01Mixes on a schedule

In a DAW a mix takes weeks: finding track BPM and stretching - by hand, automation - by hand, swap one track and the whole tail collapses. In Betonmixer the mix is one connected 'train': tracks coupled by transitions, in-track edits recalculate everything downstream. Every transition gets its own automatic volume and EQ scaffolding. The output is one WAV, mastered to BS.1770-4.

A mix built here isn't limited to a WAV render. Rekordbox XML and Traktor NML export carries the set back into your live flow - grids and markers included. The quick audition sidebar is free: browse, search, add to the mix. libmpg123 MP3 decoder

The industry-standard decoder used by VLC, Audacity, foobar2000 - and almost certainly Rekordbox and Traktor. With MPG123_GAPLESS + the LAME tag, our PCM timestamps are sample-for-sample identical to Rekordbox. No 75 ms decoder drift like every other open-source MP3 reader.

Double drops and auto-chains (PRO)

Classic D&B mixing style built in: Drop 2 of the outgoing track aligned on Drop 1 of the incoming track. Volume curve: 0 dB → −4 dB → −8 dB → −∞. Bass: 0 dB → −4 dB then a sharp vertical drop to −10 dB → −∞. 32-bar window, opener and closer fades already baked in. Ready for quick transition audition. You only edit what you don't like.

userVerified is sacred

The moment you touch a track's BPM, fix the grid, or edit sections by hand, it gets userVerified = 1 and becomes untouchable. Re-analyze, re-detect, snap-to-grid, batch normalize - nothing automatic is allowed to overwrite it ever again. Your edits are ground truth.

Pro-grade metering + master bus

BS.1770-4 LUFS meters (short-term and momentary), RMS, and a stereo-linked lookahead true-peak limiter right on the realtime bus. Auto loudness normalization to a target LUFS (PRO) - the mix lands on stream or broadcast spec without manual gain-staging. The offline render runs a 128-tap sinc resampler (vs 32-tap realtime) - the exported file is cleaner than the preview.

Is this a replacement for Rekordbox / Serato / Traktor?+

No. Rekordbox, Serato, and Traktor are live tools for realtime performance only. Betonmixer is balanced software: a non-linear editor for finalising studio mixes and, at the same time, finding tracks for live mixes plus marking them up. Our export works in your live software - grid and markers preserved. You can also import your libraries from Rekordbox, Serato, and Traktor into Betonmixer.

How is this different from other auto-mix apps?+

Auto-mix software is mostly built for entertainment: stems, effects, video, integrations with everything. Betonmixer is built to professional standards while staying approachable for beginners: genre-aware logic, accurate BPM and key detection, broadcast-grade master output (BS.1770-4 LUFS + stereo-linked true-peak), sample-accurate MP3 decoding. Fewer features for hype and sales - more quality mixes.

I mix fine in a DAW. Why do I need Betonmixer?+

A DAW is too broad a tool, built for production - which is exactly why an hour of mix costs a week there: you line up tracks by hand, hunt for BPM, stretch, draw automation by hand, swap one track and the whole mix tail collapses and everything has to move again by hand. Betonmixer is a specialised machine: a train of coupled track cars that can't be broken apart, automatic transition recalc, detection and prebuilt transition scaffolding. The same job in an evening - mastered to industry standards on the way out.

I used to run MixMeister. Is this it?+

In spirit - yes: a timeline mix editor. But MixMeister hasn't been updated in many years. This is its modern offspring and reimagining. Here you get neural key detection, genre-aware BPM, drop and section detection, BS.1770-4 LUFS mastering, Rekordbox / Traktor export, convenient playlist and library workflow - and active development.

What exactly is free, and what is PRO?+

Is there a trial?+

Yes - 7 days of full PRO, activated from inside the app. Starting the trial needs an internet connection; one trial per machine. When it ends the app falls back to FREE - nothing breaks, your projects stay in place.

Will my license ever expire?+

No. PRO is a one-time payment. Lifetime license + all future updates. No subscriptions. One key - 2 machines; move by deactivating the old one.

Windows only?+

For now, yes - Windows 10/11 x64. The engine is native C++ (Dear ImGui + OpenGL front end), sample-accurate by design, no Electron. macOS and Linux are on the roadmap but not committed to dates.

What if the auto-detector got my track wrong?+

I'm constantly improving the detection algorithms. But if it happens - open the beat-grid editor and fix it. The moment you touch BPM, grid, or sections by hand, the track gets userVerified = 1 and becomes inviolate. No automatic re-analysis, re-detection, snap-to-grid, or batch operation is allowed to overwrite it.
